In November, as the European winter begins to knock on the door, my husband and I, along with our three-year-old daughter, decided to head for sunny Tenerife. This post is for those who want to discover how to spend six fulfilling and comfortable days on this stunning island—even with a little one in tow.
Tenerife is the largest and perhaps the most popular of the Canary Islands, offering spectacular weather all year round. With an average annual temperature of 22°C and very little rain, even during winter, the island is the perfect escape from the cold months. Conveniently accessible via two international airports, Tenerife boasts natural wonders such as Mount Teide—the highest peak in Spain—and the lush greenery of the Anaga Rural Park.
The island’s dual personality—lush green mountains and black sand beaches in the north, contrasted with the dry, sunlit coasts of the south—ensures there’s something for everyone. We decided to explore both sides to get a full picture of Tenerife’s diversity.
Tenerife is one of those rare destinations where you can experience both the heat of desert landscapes and the cool freshness of tropical greenery. It’s no wonder many travelers ask, “Which is better: North or South Tenerife?” The answer isn’t straightforward, as each side offers a distinct experience. To truly appreciate the island, it’s worth exploring both.
South Tenerife: A Sun-Soaked Paradise
The southern part of the island is known for its warmer, drier climate, with nearly guaranteed sunshine year-round. This area is home to golden sandy beaches and vibrant coastal life. Most visitors flock here to enjoy the comfort of luxury resorts and the relaxation of seaside getaways.
Popular beaches like Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje are perfect for unwinding, while quieter bays like Playa Abama are ideal for families, thanks to their calm, child-friendly waters.
But South Tenerife isn’t just about sunbathing. Adventurers can enjoy jet-ski tours, whale-watching trips, or boat excursions. The area also hosts theme parks and water parks, which are a big hit with families traveling with kids.
North Tenerife: For Nature Lovers
In contrast, the northern side of Tenerife reveals a completely different character. Surrounded by mountains, this region is lush and green, with dramatic coastlines that take your breath away. The black sand beaches here are unique and far less crowded than those in the south, offering a more authentic experience.
The north is a hiker’s paradise, with picturesque trails and stunning viewpoints. From the laurel forests of the Anaga Rural Park to the winding paths of the Masca Valley, nature lovers will be in their element. Meanwhile, towns like La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz invite visitors to immerse themselves in history and local culture.
While the contrasts in climate and landscapes might tempt you to stick to one side of the island, we recommend experiencing both. Tenerife’s manageable size allows you to travel between the two regions in less than an hour, so you don’t have to miss out on either.
November – The Ideal Time to Visit
Our trip took place in November, a time when tourist numbers drop, but the weather remains perfect. This season is ideal for those looking to avoid crowds and enjoy more affordable travel. Whether it’s the beaches, mountains, or cultural attractions, the island feels more peaceful, making it easier to enjoy Tenerife’s beauty stress-free.
Tenerife: A Family-Friendly Island
What we loved most about Tenerife was how family-friendly it is. The island isn’t just for couples seeking romance or young people chasing nightlife; it’s also a treasure trove of activities for families. With our daughter, we easily found experiences where she could have fun while we, as parents, also enjoyed ourselves.
Tenerife is so much more than beaches. Its volcanoes, national parks, and authentic Canary Island experiences make it a destination that transcends the typical holiday spot. Keep reading to discover how we embraced the magic of this unique island! 😊
